The U.S. military announced early Monday that it had launched another wave of airstrikes against Iran, continuing what has now become nine consecutive nights of military operations.
The announcement came from U.S. Central Command, which has been overseeing the ongoing campaign. Activists inside Iran began reporting explosions at approximately 2:30 a.m. local time.
In a statement, Central Command said, “The strikes will continue degrading Iranian military capabilities used to attack commercial vessels and civilian mariners transiting the Strait of Hormuz.”
The military also confirmed that one American service member has been killed, and officials are working to verify the remains of a soldier who was reported missing in action following Iranian strikes over the weekend. The identities of those casualties are being withheld until their families can be properly notified.
The back-and-forth military exchanges between the United States and Iran have been ongoing for roughly a week, following the collapse of a memorandum of understanding that had been designed to ease hostilities and preserve peace between the two countries.
U.S. officials have made clear they intend to hold those responsible for the attacks accountable, vowing a continued response to the ongoing aggression.
