WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Darline Graham has announced she intends to campaign for a full Senate term, stepping up to permanently fill the seat left vacant by the death of her brother, Lindsey Graham, who served two decades in the U.S. Senate.
Speaking on Fox News’ ‘Hannity’ program in a clip released Monday, Graham described the deeply personal nature of her decision. “I have been praying a lot, talking to my family … I feel like I can do it. I feel an inner peace about it. Will it be difficult? Yes. Absolutely,” she said.
Her announcement follows a call from President Donald Trump, who urged her to enter the race just days earlier. A special Republican primary is scheduled in South Carolina on August 11.
Graham was appointed to temporarily hold her brother’s Senate seat, with that appointment set to expire in the first week of January.
She will not be running unopposed. U.S. Representative Ralph Norman, a South Carolina Republican, announced Saturday that he is also pursuing the Senate seat previously held by Lindsey Graham.
