El Niño Storms Hammer Northern Chile; Top Photos from Latin America

During the week of July 17 through July 23, 2026, a series of powerful storms driven by the El Niño weather pattern hammered northern Chile, unleashing devastating floods and landslides. The destruction left numerous communities cut off from the outside world and forced authorities to declare a state of emergency in the affected areas.

Across the Caribbean, a sailboat carrying humanitarian supplies from Europe docked in Havana. As Cuba’s economic crisis continues to worsen, organizations affiliated with the Catholic Church began distributing donations that had come from the United States.

In the Dominican Republic, the capital city of Santo Domingo welcomed athletes representing 37 nations for the centennial edition of the Central American and Caribbean Games — recognized as the oldest regional multi-sport competition in the world.
