Mark Cuban’s Investment Group Acquires Minority Stake in the Athletics

Mark Cuban has achieved a goal he has long pursued — a ownership stake in a Major League Baseball franchise. His private-equity firm, Harbinger Sports Partners, has completed the purchase of a minority share in the Athletics, while also giving the team a minority owner it had been seeking.

Harbinger Sports Partners is co-led by Cuban and Rashaun Williams, who also holds a minority ownership stake in the Atlanta Falcons. The deal marks Harbinger’s first completed ownership transaction, though financial terms were not disclosed.

According to Forbes, the Athletics are currently valued at around $2 billion, placing the franchise in the middle tier among the 30 MLB clubs. The team is scheduled to relocate to Las Vegas in 2028, where a new $2 billion ballpark is under construction.

Cuban, 67, already holds a minority ownership position in the Dallas Mavericks. He previously served as the team’s majority owner from 2000 to 2023. He also has financial interests in an esports betting platform called Unikrn and the Brampton Honey Badgers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League.

Harbinger was launched in May 2025, with Cuban among its founders. The firm’s leadership also includes former sports executives Jonathan Mariner, formerly of MLB, and Steve Cannon, formerly of the Falcons.

The company says it is actively pursuing ownership deals with other sports organizations and expects to reveal additional partnerships in the coming months.
