The Delaware Forest Service has sent a team of wildland firefighters to Minnesota to assist with a series of wildfires sparked by lightning strikes, mobilizing as part of the country’s coordinated national wildfire response system.
The 17-member Suppression Module, known as a SMOD, left Blackbird State Forest at 6 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, heading out for a 14-day assignment. The crew’s first active firefighting shift was expected to get underway upon their arrival in Minnesota.
The deployment reflects Delaware’s role in the broader national system for responding to wildfire emergencies, which allows states to share firefighting resources when and where they are needed most.
