The Colorado Rapids have secured the future of midfielder Wayne Frederick, announcing Friday that the 22-year-old Maryland native has agreed to a multiyear contract that runs through the 2029-30 season, with the club holding an option for the following year as well.
Frederick is currently in the midst of the best stretch of his young career, establishing new personal records in goals (two), assists (five), starts (10), appearances (13), and minutes played (928). The current campaign also marked a milestone moment — Frederick netted his first-ever MLS goal on March 21. Across parts of three professional seasons, he has appeared in 23 matches with 12 starts.
Rapids president Padraig Smith highlighted what makes Frederick such a valuable piece of the club’s plans going forward. “Wayne has a strong combination of qualities that make him an excellent fit for our game model,” Smith said. “He is an elite athlete with the physical capacity to impact the game in every phase, and his versatility gives us flexibility across the midfield. Just as importantly, his mentality and character embody the standards we want at this club. We’re excited to see him continue to flourish with the Rapids.”
Frederick came to Colorado as the No. 2 overall selection in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft out of Duke University. He made his professional debut on April 24, 2024, and has since earned consistent recognition from head coach Matt Wells.
Wells spoke glowingly about the young midfielder’s attitude and potential. “Wayne has been a great example of a player that has fully embraced every aspect of the environment we’ve created since arriving in January,” Wells said. “His mentality and fearlessness caught my eye very early on during preseason. He’s had some really strong performances this season, but the exciting part for us as a coaching staff is how much room for growth we still see in him.”
