French tennis player Quentin Halys is heading to the Generali Open final in Kitzbuhel, Austria after taking down Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann 6-4, 7-6 (2) in their semifinal matchup.
Halys, who earlier in the tournament eliminated No. 2 seed Valentin Vacherot, is now set to compete in his second career tour-level final. He delivered a dominant serving performance, firing 11 aces against just three double faults and winning an impressive 94.1% of his first-serve points — converting 32 of 34 attempts. Halys faced only one break point throughout the match while generating 10 opportunities on Hanfmann’s serve, converting two of them. Despite letting eight match points slip away in the second set, he went on to win the tiebreaker with ease.
Standing between Halys and a title is Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik, the tournament’s top seed and defending champion. Bublik dispatched Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-3, 6-4 in his semifinal, breaking serve in the opening return game of each set and never facing serious danger. Notably, Bublik won last year’s Generali Open without losing a single set — and he has yet to drop a set in this year’s tournament either.
At the Estoril Open in Portugal, World No. 78 Luca Van Assche turned in a stunning performance, rallying past top-seeded Andrey Rublev 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to reach his first tour-level semifinal.
Van Assche halted Rublev’s six-match winning streak despite a tough opening set. He managed to save 9 of 10 break points in that first set, then faced just one break point over the remainder of the match. In the decisive third set, he converted the only break opportunity at 1-1 and held off a break attempt while serving at 5-4 before closing out the win.
Van Assche will next face Hugo Gaston in an all-French semifinal. Gaston advanced by beating Portugal’s Tiago Torres 6-3, 6-4 — a win aided by Torres committing seven double faults, despite Gaston winning only 61.8% of his own first-serve points.
In the other Estoril semifinal, Italy’s No. 2 seed Luciano Darderi will take on Belgium’s No. 4 seed Alexander Blockx. Darderi recovered from a sluggish start to defeat Portugal’s Jaime Faria 2-6, 7-5, 6-2, while Blockx edged Argentina’s Roman Andres Burruchaga 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.
