DHAKA — Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has stepped down from office, according to reports from local media outlets in the country on Friday.
Shahabuddin took office in April 2023 and served as president during one of the most turbulent chapters in the South Asian nation’s recent history. His tenure included the dramatic removal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024, when youth-led protests forced her out of power. Shahabuddin remained in his role until a caretaker government was established in the days that followed.
While the president serves as Bangladesh’s head of state, the position carries mostly ceremonial duties. Real governing authority in the country lies with the prime minister and the cabinet.
