Amazon’s self-driving car division, Zoox, announced Friday that it is recalling 105 of its autonomous vehicles due to concerns that the cars may be unable to detect heavy smoke — a flaw that could also hinder emergency personnel responding to incidents.
The announcement follows a warning issued last week by the country’s leading auto safety official, who called on self-driving vehicle companies to urgently address what was described as a “clear pattern” of driverless cars obstructing law enforcement officers and other first responders.
