The Boston Red Sox made a roster move Tuesday, acquiring outfielder Jahmai Jones from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for a player to be named later, adding a right-handed bat to their outfield rotation.
To clear a spot on the roster, Boston sent outfielder Nate Eaton down to Triple-A Worcester.
Jones, 28, had been designated for assignment by Detroit last Thursday following a tough stretch at the plate. He batted just .137, going 13-for-95 with two home runs and seven RBIs across 57 games with the Tigers this season.
Over his big league career, Jones carries a .214 batting average with 10 home runs and 41 RBIs in 198 regular-season games. He has suited up for the Los Angeles Angels in 2020, the Baltimore Orioles in 2021, the Milwaukee Brewers in 2023, the New York Yankees in 2024, and the Tigers spanning 2025 and 2026. The Angels originally drafted him in the second round of the 2015 MLB Draft.
In Boston, Jones will join an outfield group that includes left-handed hitters Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu, and Masataka Yoshida, who have been rotating through both outfield spots and the designated hitter role.
Eaton, 29, struggled in his time with the Red Sox this season, hitting .125 — just 4-for-32 — with one home run and five RBIs in 14 games. For his career, he holds a .221 average with three home runs and 22 RBIs in 127 games split between the Kansas City Royals from 2022 to 2023 and the Red Sox. At Worcester this season, the right-handed hitter has been far more productive, batting .283 with five home runs, 22 RBIs, a .348 on-base percentage, and a .450 slugging percentage in 48 games.
