One Dead, Eight Hurt in Overnight Russian Missile Strike on Kyiv

Ukrainian authorities report that one person lost their life and eight more were wounded following an overnight Russian assault on the capital city of Kyiv that involved ballistic missiles.

The attack got underway at approximately 1:30 a.m. local time and lasted for several hours, with the sounds of explosions heard throughout the city.

According to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service, the strikes set off fires in five separate districts, causing damage to homes, office buildings, industrial facilities, a dormitory, and vehicles.

Emergency crews rescued four people from a burning private residence in the Sviatoshynskyi district. In the Shevchenkivskyi district, rescue teams also pulled residents to safety from a three-story building that had caught fire. A blaze in a non-residential structure was brought under control as well. One victim was later found dead at the scene.

Fire crews were additionally called to respond to blazes in the Solomyanskyi, Desnianskyi, and Dnipro districts of the city.

Russia has carried out several major attacks on Kyiv in recent weeks, taking advantage of Ukraine’s dwindling supply of Patriot air defense missiles — currently the most reliable tool Ukraine has for shooting down Russian ballistic missiles. U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated he is willing to allow Ukraine to obtain licenses to manufacture Patriot interceptor missiles, a move that could strengthen Kyiv’s ability to defend against such strikes. Even so, the specific details and a clear timeline for putting that decision into action have yet to be established.
