NYC Man Sentenced to 25 Years to Life for Killing Ex-Girlfriend Pushing Baby Stroller

NEW YORK — A New York man found guilty of murdering his ex-girlfriend while she pushed their baby in a stroller has been handed a sentence of 25 years to life behind bars, according to prosecutors.

A jury convicted Isaac Argro in May for the 2022 killing of Azsia Johnson. According to prosecutors, Argro shot Johnson on a Manhattan street near a playground after convincing her to meet him so he could hand over belongings for their 3-month-old daughter.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg issued a statement saying, “Azsia Johnson was a loving parent who left an abusive relationship and began to rebuild her life. Her dreams of moving forward were brought to a horrific end” by Argro.

A message left for Argro’s attorney seeking comment had not been returned. Argro is 26 years old.

Prosecutors stated that Argro had subjected Johnson, who was 20 years old, to both physical and emotional abuse throughout their relationship. After she left him, the D.A.’s office noted in a statement earlier this spring that Johnson was “determined to give co-parenting a try.”

Johnson agreed to meet Argro on June 29, 2022, to pick up the supposed baby items, and she informed a family member via text message about the planned meeting, prosecutors said. Argro reportedly waited for her on the street and shot her point-blank in the temple. Their infant daughter was not harmed.

Argro was taken into custody two days after the shooting.

Then-Mayor Eric Adams, along with other city officials, attended a vigil held in Johnson’s honor the day following the shooting. Supporters continue to place her photo at the location of the shooting each year on the anniversary of her death.
