Ford Motor Co. has announced a recall of more than half a million of its Bronco vehicles because a wiring harness in the engine compartment could short circuit and potentially cause a fire.
The company confirmed Thursday that 565,691 Ford Broncos and Bronco Raptors from model years 2021 through 2026 are included in the recall. Ford estimates that roughly 1% of those vehicles actually have the defective wiring harness. The automaker says it has not received any reports of accidents or injuries connected to this issue.
The defect stems from inadequate protection around the wiring harness, which can leave wires exposed and lead to a short circuit. If a short circuit occurs, drivers could see smoke coming from their air vents or a warning message appear on the dashboard — potentially followed by flames emerging from the passenger side of the engine compartment.
Dealerships will address the problem by installing new protective covers over the wiring at no charge to vehicle owners.
Ford has assigned this recall the number 26S55. Owners can look up their vehicle identification number on NHTSA.gov to confirm if their vehicle is included. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has assigned this recall campaign the number 26V468.
