Five people lost their lives and three others were injured after a massive loess soil collapse buried a home in Haoyi village, located in Hongtong county within China’s northern Shanxi province, according to state-run Xinhua News Agency.
The collapse happened at 6:49 p.m. on Friday, completely burying a residential structure under heavy soil. Local emergency management officials confirmed that all eight individuals who had been trapped were eventually located.
Of those eight, five showed no signs of life at the scene. The remaining three survivors were transported to a nearby hospital, where they are reported to be in stable condition.
In response to the disaster, local authorities mobilized more than 550 rescue workers, including police officers, firefighters, and medical personnel, to assist in the recovery effort.
The operation also relied on more than 130 pieces of heavy equipment and specialized tools, such as loaders, cranes, drones, and life-detection devices, to search through the collapsed soil.
