Federal agricultural officials have released a pest risk analysis looking at the potential dangers involved in transporting fresh turmeric rhizomes — known scientifically as Curcuma longa L. — from Puerto Rico to the continental United States for consumption.
After completing the analysis, officials determined that requiring one or more specific phytosanitary measures — essentially plant health safeguards — would be adequate to prevent the introduction or spread of plant pests or noxious weeds that could result from this type of interstate movement.
The pest risk analysis has been made available to the public, and officials are inviting review and comment on the findings.
