Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva continues to hold a commanding position over Senator Flavio Bolsonaro in polling ahead of October’s presidential election, according to a new survey released Monday.
The poll, conducted by Nexus and commissioned by financial institution BTG Pactual, shows the left-leaning Lula defeating the son of former right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro in a hypothetical second-round runoff by a margin of 47% to 43%.
Those numbers are largely consistent with a July 13 poll, which had Lula leading by a similar 47% to 44% margin.
In a simulated first-round scenario, Lula would come out on top with 42% of the vote. Bolsonaro would follow in second place at 33%, with Ronaldo Caiado at 6%, Renan Santos at 5%, and Romeu Zema at 3%.
Under Brazil’s electoral system, if no candidate receives more than 50% of valid votes in the first round, the top two vote-getters advance to a runoff election.
Nexus conducted the survey between July 24 and July 26, polling 2,004 people. The margin of error is plus or minus 2 percentage points.
