Two people were killed and eight others injured when Ukrainian drones struck the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don overnight, according to regional governor Yuri Slyusar, who announced the casualties on Monday. One of the injured was described as being in critical condition.
Slyusar reported that air defense units managed to shoot down approximately 50 Ukrainian drones over the region. He said the attack targeted the cities of Rostov and Taganrog, along with four regional districts — Chertkovsky, Tarasovsky, Sholokhovsky, and Millerovsky. Among the structures damaged in Rostov were apartment buildings, warehouses, and a shelter serving homeless residents.
In Taganrog, a port city situated along the Sea of Azov that houses various industrial operations and a grain terminal, an unnamed production facility sustained damage during the attack, the governor said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy separately confirmed Monday that Ukrainian forces had carried out overnight strikes on a Russian export terminal in the Rostov region, as well as oil-related facilities in the Yaroslavl and Udmurtia regions.
The overnight strikes come amid an escalating pattern of military activity in and around the Black Sea and Sea of Azov. In recent weeks, both Russia and Ukraine have launched attacks on dozens of vessels in those waters, including oil tankers and cargo ships.
