BERLIN — German federal prosecutors announced Monday that a second person taken into custody following a deadly vehicle attack on Berlin’s Pride celebrations has been let go.
“We continue to investigate broadly,” the prosecutors’ office stated to Reuters, declining to provide any additional details.
According to Spiegel, citing unnamed sources, authorities freed the individual after they were unable to confirm an initial suspicion that he had been riding inside the vehicle at the time of the attack.
The car-ramming occurred Saturday night at approximately 10 p.m. local time (8 p.m. GMT) in Tiergarten park, located near the Brandenburg Gate. The attack resulted in one fatality and took place close to the annual Christopher Street Day celebrations being held in the area.
The man believed to have been driving the vehicle — a 21-year-old with a documented history of Islamist extremist activity — was shot and killed in Berlin the following day, on Sunday.
