The Portland Timbers are putting the finishing touches on a deal to bring in Dutch forward Vincent Janssen, according to a report published Monday by The Athletic.
Janssen, 32, became available as a free agent after parting ways with Belgium’s Royal Antwerp earlier this summer.
According to the report, Janssen is not expected to take up a designated player roster spot in Portland. His signing would help address the gap left by Felipe Mora, who recently departed for Mexican top-flight side Atletico San Luis.
Last season with Royal Antwerp, Janssen put together a strong campaign, recording 13 goals and seven assists across 40 appearances in all competitions.
The Dutch striker has prior experience playing in North America, having spent time with Mexico’s Monterrey from 2019 to 2022, where he netted 24 goals. His career also includes stints with Turkey’s Fenerbahce, England’s Tottenham Hotspur, and Dutch clubs AZ and Almere City.
On the international stage, Janssen earned 22 caps for the Netherlands and scored seven goals. He was part of the Dutch squad that competed in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
