Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Jake Mangum was scratched from the lineup ahead of Game 2 of Wednesday’s doubleheader at New York due to discomfort in his right foot.
Mangum had originally been set to bat leadoff against Yankees left-hander Max Fried, but he was held out so medical staff could evaluate his foot. With Mangum out, Nick Gonzales shifted into the leadoff spot and Billy Cook stepped in to cover center field.
The injury stems from a foul ball Mangum took off his foot during Game 1, though he remained in that contest. He contributed two hits in Pittsburgh’s 5-3 win, highlighted by an RBI single in a two-run 10th inning against Fernando Cruz. That victory marked the Pirates’ ninth win in their last 13 games.
On the season, Mangum is batting .303 with two home runs and 21 RBIs across 81 games. His 19 stolen bases place him third on the Pirates’ roster, behind Konnor Griffin and Oneil Cruz — both of whom are currently sidelined on the injured list.
