The New York Yankees made a roster move between games of their Wednesday day/night doubleheader against the Pittsburgh Pirates, activating left-handed starter Max Fried to take the mound in Game 2.
The 32-year-old Fried had been away from major league action since May 13, when he exited a game against the Baltimore Orioles after just three innings. He was placed on the injured list three days later, with the designation backdated to May 14, due to a bone bruise on his left elbow.
Heading into Wednesday’s action, Fried carried a 4-3 record with a 3.21 ERA over 61 2/3 innings across 10 starts. He was dominant through April, posting a 4-1 record and a 2.09 ERA, but struggled in May before going on the shelf, giving up 11 earned runs in just 14 1/3 innings that month.
To open a roster spot for Fried, the Yankees optioned right-hander Kervin Castro to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The 27-year-old Castro had been called up during Sunday’s doubleheader against the Los Angeles Dodgers. In his lone appearance for New York — which also marked his first MLB outing since 2022 — Castro gave up one run over two innings on May 8.
