Nvidia is making a massive financial bet on artificial intelligence, with plans to invest $5 billion in a startup called Safe Superintelligence, according to a source with knowledge of the agreement.
The deal pairs the prominent chipmaker with the AI company co-founded by Ilya Sutskever, who previously served as chief scientist at OpenAI. Both companies went public with the partnership on Monday morning, though they did not reveal the dollar amount at the time of the announcement.
According to the companies, the investment is intended to expand Safe Superintelligence’s access to computing resources. As part of the arrangement, the startup will also gain access to Nvidia’s newest hardware platform, known as Vera Rubin.
Two people familiar with the situation said the agreement was reached in only a few weeks. Bloomberg was the first outlet to report the specific size of Nvidia’s financial stake in the deal.
