A Michigan man fatally shot his wife and six children before turning the gun on himself, and all eight family members were later found inside their burning home, investigators announced Monday.
Kristopher and Amanda Karolkiewicz, along with their six children ranging in age from 5 to 15, were found dead Friday at their residence in Grand Haven Township, located on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. Emergency responders had been called to the scene for a fire and discovered the bodies upon arrival.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department released a statement Monday indicating that autopsies confirmed every family member died from gunshot wounds, and that Kristopher Karolkiewicz was responsible for his own death as well.
“The investigation shows that this was a murder-suicide,” wrote Capt. Jacob Sparks in the department’s release.
Investigators believe the fire was deliberately started in several locations throughout the home following the shootings, though the exact origin point is still under investigation, according to Sparks. The family’s pets also died in the blaze.
Attempts to reach the couple’s relatives for comment were made Monday. Kris Karolkiewicz was 47 years old; his wife, known to many as Mandy, was 39.
According to a parenting blog that Mandy Karolkiewicz maintained more than a decade ago, the couple first met while working together at a beverage company in 2008 and began a relationship that same summer.
The couple welcomed their first child on April 25, 2011, a day Mandy described in the blog as “the best day of my life (so far).” Two more sons arrived over the following four years. During that time, she transitioned from a career in banking to a part-time role at a local insurance agency before eventually leaving the workforce entirely. The couple had also been making plans to adopt additional children.
Her blog regularly touched on her Christian faith, the happiness she found in family life, and her deep admiration for her husband as a father. “My kids have that actual example of a selfless, Christ-like father,” she wrote in 2015.
Kris Karolkiewicz also expressed gratitude for their life together. “I’m a very lucky guy,” he wrote in a Facebook post in 2019, posted ahead of their 10th anniversary.
In more recent years, Mandy Karolkiewicz had been working as a substitute teacher at an elementary school. The local school district praised her in a January Facebook post, saying she went “above and beyond for students, especially when they’re having a hard day, responding with empathy, patience, and care.” A request for comment was sent Monday to the Grand Haven Area Public Schools system, which had posted a message Friday — without naming anyone — urging the community to “avoid speculation” about the deaths.
Though her blog wrapped up in 2016, Mandy continued sharing glimpses of family life through TikTok videos, including footage from a trip to China earlier this month with two of her children.
