German police and prosecutors issued a wanted notice Sunday for a fugitive suspect connected to a van attack near Berlin’s Pride festival that claimed one life and left at least 16 people injured.
Authorities are seeking a 21-year-old man they have identified as Abdul B., asking the public to come forward with any information that could help locate him.
Officials believe the suspect used a moving vehicle to injure several people before one or more individuals fled the scene. Investigators also reported that a number of victims appeared to have been stabbed during the incident.
The Sunday notice cautioned the public against making “direct contact” with the man, warning that he may be carrying a weapon and should be considered dangerous.
Earlier, police had disclosed that the suspect had been identified and had known ties to Islamic groups operating in the German capital.
“The suspect is known to police. He is known to us as a member of Islamic circles here in Berlin, and our search for this person is proceeding at full speed,” said police spokesperson Florian Nath.
Nath also noted that investigators still have significant gaps in their understanding of the case, stating, “we still have no information whatsoever regarding his specific motives, the exact sequence of events, or his role in the crime itself.”
