El Salvador Opposition Names Two Candidates to Challenge Bukele in 2027

SAN SALVADOR — El Salvador’s opposition has put forward two candidates to challenge President Nayib Bukele when the country heads to the polls in 2027.

The right-wing ARENA party announced former lawmaker Maytee Iraheta as its presidential candidate. Iraheta made the announcement herself in a statement delivered to reporters on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the left-wing FMLN party revealed its own contender — doctor and union leader Rafael Aguirre — through a post on social media, also on Sunday.

Both candidates will now face the task of mounting campaigns against the incumbent president ahead of next year’s election.
