The Miami Marlins have made unwanted history, suffering their 12th consecutive defeat after blowing a three-run lead to the visiting San Diego Padres, who rallied for a 5-3 victory on Sunday. The loss surpasses the previous franchise record of 11 straight losses, which Miami had reached on three prior occasions, most recently back in June 2011.
The Padres were down 3-0 heading into the fifth inning when Manny Machado sparked the comeback with an RBI double. Then in the eighth, Machado and Jackson Merrill each launched home runs as part of a four-run frame that put San Diego ahead for good. Jake Cronenworth recorded three hits and crossed the plate twice, while Ty France, Luis Rengifo, and Merrill each contributed two hits in the series-clinching win.
Padres starter Walker Buehler held the Marlins to three runs — two of them earned — on four hits across five and one-third innings, striking out seven and walking two. Mason Miller closed things out in the ninth inning, recording his 27th save of the season.
For Miami, Kyle Stowers provided the offensive highlights with a double and a home run. Marlins starter Janson Junk pitched four and two-thirds innings, giving up just one run on seven hits before exiting. Reliever Lake Bachar took the loss, surrendering two home runs in the first four batters he faced in the eighth inning.
Rays 1, Guardians 0
Drew Rasmussen was nearly untouchable, allowing just one hit over seven scoreless innings as Tampa Bay swept Cleveland in a three-game series in St. Petersburg, Fla. Rasmussen improved to 9-5 on the season, walking one and striking out nine. The only Cleveland hit came on Steven Kwan’s double to open the game.
The game’s lone run came in the fifth inning when Chandler Simpson singled to lead off, advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on a groundout by Ben Williamson, then scored on a bunt single by Cedric Mullins. Parker Messick pitched well for Cleveland, surrendering just one run on six hits over seven and two-thirds innings with six strikeouts and no walks, but took the hard-luck loss.
Braves 3, Orioles 2 (11 innings)
Atlanta edged Baltimore in an eleven-inning thriller to take the rubber game of a three-game series. Austin Riley delivered the go-ahead run with an extra-inning double, and Tyler Kinley preserved the lead by stranding the bases loaded in both the 10th and 11th innings.
Dominic Smith drove in two runs with a pair of singles and went 3-for-5, while starter Reynaldo Lopez tossed five and two-thirds scoreless innings for Atlanta, which has now won eight of its last 11 games. Pete Alonso homered for Baltimore, and the Orioles tied the game in the ninth on a costly error by Ozzie Albies, but they couldn’t capitalize on scoring chances in the final two innings. Andrew Kittredge took the loss. Shane Baz had started for Baltimore, allowing two runs on six hits over four and one-third innings.
Pirates 8, Cubs 7
Ryan O’Hearn celebrated his 33rd birthday in style, belting a grand slam — his second of the season and fourth of his career — to help Pittsburgh hold off Chicago at home. Shawn Ross added a two-run homer in just his second career MLB game, and rookie Esmerlyn Valdez also went deep and drove in a run. Brandon Lowe collected three hits and scored twice as the Pirates snapped a three-game losing streak.
Chicago’s Seiya Suzuki hit a two-run homer in the ninth. Pete Crow-Armstrong ripped an RBI triple, and Dansby Swanson, Nico Hoerner, and Pedro Ramirez each added an RBI single for the Cubs.
Nationals 10, Diamondbacks 7
CJ Abrams and James Wood each hit two home runs as Washington defeated visiting Arizona in the rubber game of the series between National League wild-card contenders. Abrams went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, pushing his totals to seven homers and 14 RBIs over his last seven games. Wood became the fifth player in the majors to reach 30 home runs this season. Dylan Crews chipped in three hits for Washington.
For Arizona, Geraldo Perdomo and Ketel Marte each homered, and Gabriel Moreno contributed two doubles and a sacrifice fly.
Red Sox 6, Blue Jays 1
Boston’s Ranger Suarez returned from a groin strain that had sidelined him since July 5, and combined with four relievers to shut down visiting Toronto and clinch the team’s sixth consecutive series victory. Suarez threw four scoreless innings on 64 pitches before being pulled, holding the Blue Jays to four hits. Jarren Duran and Jahmai Jones each delivered two-run hits to give Boston’s pitchers plenty of cushion. The Red Sox have now won 17 of their last 19 games.
Toronto starter Kevin Gausman fell to 4-10 after allowing three runs and five hits over six innings. The 35-year-old has not earned a win since May 22, and Toronto has dropped eight straight games in which he has started. Andres Gimenez prevented a shutout with a two-out RBI single in the ninth that scored Daulton Varsho.
Royals 5, Tigers 4
Michael Massey delivered a two-out, two-run homer in the eighth inning to lift visiting Kansas City past Detroit. The blast was Massey’s eighth of the year and made a winner of Nate Pearson, who improved to 2-0 in his Royals debut after being acquired in a trade with Houston. Lane Thomas hit a solo homer and Luke Maile added an RBI double as Kansas City salvaged a series split. Dillon Dingler went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Detroit.

Tyrone Taylor’s go-ahead three-run homer in the sixth inning powered New York past visiting Los Angeles. Taylor greeted reliever Evan Phillips with a 405-foot shot into the left field seats for his eighth homer of the season and fifth since July 4. Marcus Semien added a three-run home run of his own as the Mets snapped a three-game losing streak. Freddie Freeman went 2-for-4 with an RBI for his fourth consecutive multi-hit game, and Tommy Edman and Teoscar Hernandez also each went 2-for-4 for Los Angeles.
White Sox 12, Astros 3
Miguel Vargas hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth inning and Munetaka Murakami slugged two home runs as host Chicago routed Houston to avoid a series sweep. Murakami went 3-for-5 with a career-high six RBIs. Sean Newcomb earned the win by retiring the final two batters in the sixth. Jeremy Pena homered in each of his first two at-bats for Houston, and Taylor Trammell added a solo shot, but the Astros saw their five-game winning streak come to an end. Ronel Blanco, making just his second start since returning from Tommy John surgery, allowed five runs on four hits over five and one-third innings and took the loss.

Ryan Jeffers went 3-for-5 with three RBIs to help Minnesota hold on and beat the Athletics in Minneapolis, taking the rubber match of the three-game series. Ryan Kreidler went 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI, and Kody Clemens went 3-for-5 with two triples and an RBI for the Twins. Nick Kurtz hit a three-run home run for the Athletics, and Jeff McNeil went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Brewers 11, Rockies 2
Jacob Misiorowski was dominant, retiring the first 14 batters he faced and finishing with 12 strikeouts as host Milwaukee beat Colorado to claim the series rubber match. Misiorowski improved to 11-4, striking out seven straight to open the game and fanning 12 of the first 13 batters he faced, with his fastball consistently topping 100 mph. Cole Carrigg ended the bid for a perfect game with an opposite-field homer to left in the fifth — his fifth of the season. Andrew Vaughn also homered for Milwaukee. Willi Castro added a solo shot in the seventh for Colorado, which finished with five hits and struck out 15 times.
Reds 5, Cardinals 3 (10 innings)
Cincinnati plated three runs in the top of the 10th inning to win the rubber game over host St. Louis. Nathaniel Lowe went 3-for-5 and drove in two with a single in the 10th. Elly De La Cruz homered for the Reds. Starter Andrew Abbott allowed two runs on three hits with four strikeouts in six innings. Brock Burke retired all four batters he faced in the eighth and ninth, and Julian Garcia earned his first career save.
Cardinals starter Kyle Leahy struck out a career-high nine batters while limiting Cincinnati to two runs on six hits in six innings. Reliever Matt Svanson took the loss after giving up all three runs in the 10th. Alec Burleson went 3-for-5 for St. Louis with a run scored and an RBI.
Mariners 6, Rangers 4
Dominic Canzone and Randy Arozarena hit back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning as Seattle rallied to beat Texas in an American League West matchup at Arlington, Texas. Reliever Gabe Speier earned the win after throwing one and one-third hitless innings with three strikeouts, and Andres Munoz struck out the side in the ninth for his 18th save. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for Seattle and moved the Mariners past Houston into second place in the division, one and a half games behind Texas. Ezequiel Duran homered for the Rangers, who had won the first two games of the four-game series.
Angels 4, Giants 3
Jorge Soler and Jo Adell hit home runs in the fourth inning, Jose Soriano pitched five strong innings, and Los Angeles salvaged a win in their road interleague series at San Francisco. Mike Trout went a perfect 4-for-4 for the Angels, snapping a three-game losing streak. The four-hit performance was Trout’s first since April 2021 and the 21st of his career, with his other three hits being singles. Soriano improved to 9-6, allowing just an unearned run on three hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Giants starter Carson Whisenhunt was charged with all four Los Angeles runs on five hits, finishing with two walks and seven strikeouts.
