The Chicago White Sox added to their pitching staff Sunday, acquiring right-hander Jose Urquidy from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for minor league pitcher Felix Doroteo.
Pittsburgh had designated Urquidy for assignment just two days earlier, on Friday, following a difficult five-game run with the team. The 31-year-old posted a 0-1 record with an 8.53 ERA and six strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings of bullpen work during his time with the Pirates.
Before his brief major league stint, Urquidy spent the bulk of the season at the Triple-A level with Indianapolis, where he went 4-5 with a 3.66 ERA over 17 starts, striking out 73 batters in 83 2/3 innings.
The veteran right-hander has a career major league record of 27-17 with a 4.07 ERA across 86 appearances — 70 of them starts — spread over seven seasons with the Houston Astros, Detroit Tigers, and Pirates.
Urquidy’s path back to the big leagues has not been easy. He underwent his second Tommy John surgery in 2024 before making his return with Detroit last season.
Heading to Pittsburgh in the deal is Doroteo, a 21-year-old right-hander in his first year of professional baseball. He compiled a 3-2 record with a 4.50 ERA and 24 strikeouts across 18 innings in 16 appearances for the Arizona Complex League White Sox.
