Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley and his family were targeted in a burglary at their suburban Philadelphia home early Saturday, according to the Tredyffrin Township Police Department.
The incident happened around 5 a.m., when officers were sent to Barkley’s home after a burglary-in-progress call was received. By the time police arrived, the suspected burglars had already left the scene. Barkley and his family were not hurt.
At least one of the suspects had entered the home while Barkley and his family were inside. Authorities are searching for at least two individuals and have released a photo of a white SUV believed to be tied to the crime.
Tredyffrin Township Police Captain Tyler Moyer said the well-being of those inside the home was the top priority. “They were home, and fortunately, as you know, with any situation like this, our main concern is that the residents of that home at the time were unharmed, which they were,” Moyer said. “They were fine afterwards, obviously unsettled, as anyone would be.”
Chester County detectives are working alongside Tredyffrin Township police on the case, the Chester County District Attorney’s Office confirmed.
“We are incredibly grateful that the Barkley family was not injured during this incident,” the D.A.’s office said in a statement on social media. “We are asking the public to help us identify those responsible by checking any home security cameras for suspicious activity in the area around 5:00 a.m. If you saw anything unusual or have video that may assist investigators, please contact the Tredyffrin Township Police Department immediately.”
Given that a number of professional athletes have been targeted in theft-related crimes in recent months, Tredyffrin Township police said they plan to reach out to federal authorities to determine whether this incident may be connected to a broader pattern.
“We will look at all angles of this because we know, obviously, it’s been all over the news in the past few years about different professional athletes’ homes getting burglarized,” Moyer said.
