A Heat Advisory is in effect for much of the Delmarva Peninsula as dangerously hot and humid conditions are expected to grip the region Wednesday.
The National Weather Service has issued the advisory from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, covering Kent, Inland Sussex, and Delaware Beaches counties in Delaware, as well as Caroline County on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Portions of southern New Jersey, including Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland, and Salem counties, are also included.
Heat index values — what the temperature actually feels like on your skin — could soar as high as 109 degrees. Health officials warn that these conditions can quickly lead to heat exhaustion or life-threatening heat stroke.
Residents are urged to drink plenty of fluids, stay indoors in air conditioning, and avoid prolonged sun exposure. If you must be outside, wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and try to limit strenuous activity to the early morning or evening hours.
Please check on elderly relatives, neighbors, and those without air conditioning.
If someone shows signs of heat stroke, move them to a cool, shaded location immediately and call 9-1-1. Heat stroke is a medical emergency.
The advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Wednesday evening.
