DELMARVA — Livestock producers across the country are being urged to stay vigilant against the New World screwworm. A veterinarian with the Indiana State Board of Animal Health warns the parasite poses a serious danger to individual animals. Producers should look for wounds that are not healing or are growing in size. Early detection is critical, and that warning applies to Delmarva producers as well.
Markets
Cattle futures took a sharp hit Tuesday at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. August live cattle dropped $3.30 to close at $231.42. August feeder cattle fell $5.55 to settle at $348.80. Direct cash cattle trade stayed quiet into the close.
In the grain markets, September corn finished at $4.38½ per bushel, down 2½ cents. August soybeans closed at $11.92¾, off 4 cents. September Chicago wheat was the bright spot, gaining nearly 10 cents to settle at $6.45. Locally, Laurel Grain Company in Laurel is bidding $4.84 on September corn and $11.41 on November soybeans.
Forecast
Dangerous heat is building across Delmarva. A Heat Advisory and an Extreme Heat Warning are both in effect through Wednesday evening. Temperatures Tuesday topped out near 92°F. Wednesday’s forecast calls for highs near 100° under sunny skies. An Air Quality Alert is also in effect Tuesday night. Producers are advised to keep livestock watered and limit fieldwork to early morning hours.
