Man Killed by Semi-Truck While Fleeing ICE Agents in Florida

A 28-year-old man lost his life Tuesday morning in St. Augustine, Florida after running from federal immigration agents and being struck by a tractor trailer, according to authorities.

The man was one of four people riding in a vehicle that pulled into the parking lot of a gas station and convenience store before 7 a.m. Agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Homeland Security Investigations approached the vehicle and made contact with the occupants.

All four individuals then took off running on foot. One of them bolted across a heavily traveled road and was hit by an oncoming semi-truck. Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Dylan Bryan, in a written statement, said the truck driver pulled over and made an effort to help the man after the collision.

The deadly incident is the third fatality in approximately one week connected to encounters involving ICE agents. The two previous deaths occurred in separate shooting incidents in Texas and Maine.

Neither ICE nor the Department of Homeland Security responded to requests for comment from The Associated Press.
