Colombia’s President-Elect Names Miguel Gomez as Finance Minister

Miguel Gomez confirmed to Reuters on Tuesday that he has been selected to serve as finance minister by Colombia’s president-elect, Abelardo De La Espriella.

Once in office, Gomez will face the significant challenge of advancing sweeping economic reforms through a Congress sharply divided along political lines, all while working to stabilize the nation’s struggling financial situation.

De La Espriella has laid out an ambitious agenda that includes cutting taxes, rolling back government regulations, and reducing the overall size of the Colombian government by 40 percent — moves he says are necessary to address a growing budget deficit that has already taken a toll on the country’s credit rating.
