Canadian Wildfire Smoke Drifting Into Sussex County, Delaware

GEORGETOWN, DE (Thursday, July 16, 2026, 3 p.m.) — A large wildfire burning across Canada is sending plumes of smoke into the eastern United States, and southern Delaware is among the areas feeling the effects.

Shifting winds combined with the sheer scale of the fire have pushed massive columns of smoke southward, creating hazy skies and reduced visibility across parts of Sussex County. People living in or visiting the area may notice an unusual smell or a hazy atmosphere over the coming days.

The Sussex County Emergency Communications Division — the county’s 9-1-1 Center — has fielded numerous calls from residents concerned about the smoke and odor. Fire crews sent out to investigate those reports have verified that the conditions are tied directly to the Canadian wildfires.

At this time, officials say there is no direct danger to the health or safety of Sussex County residents and visitors. The Sussex County Department of Public Safety is actively monitoring the situation as it develops.

Anyone who is sensitive to smoke or experiences difficulty with poor air quality is encouraged to stay inside and minimize outdoor activity until conditions improve. Residents are also reminded to dial 9-1-1 only in the case of a true emergency.
