The Canadian government’s latest census form is generating significant backlash from citizens who take issue with some of its more pointed questions.
The census, administered from Ottawa, asks residents to select a gender identity from a list of seven different choices. It also poses the question, “What was your sex at birth?” — a combination that has stirred debate among many Canadians.
Adding to the controversy, the form requires people to disclose their religious affiliation. That particular question has drawn complaints from both Christians and atheists, who apparently feel the inquiry is inappropriate for a government document.
Canadians who choose not to fill out the census are not off the hook — the government can impose a fine of up to $500 for failing to complete the form.
