VIENNA — Berlin police announced Sunday that they have identified a suspect in what appears to have been a deliberate car attack targeting Pride festivities in the German city the night before.
A spokesperson for Berlin police told reporters gathered at the scene that the suspected attacker is known to law enforcement as someone connected to the city’s Islamist community. Despite being identified, the individual had not been arrested as of Sunday.
“We have now identified a suspected perpetrator. Measures against this suspected perpetrator, who has not yet been arrested, are underway. However, this suspected perpetrator is known to the police as a member of the Islamist scene here in Berlin,” the police spokesperson stated.
Authorities indicated that efforts to locate and detain the suspect were ongoing following the Saturday night incident.
