All-Star catcher Shea Langeliers of the Athletics could be sidelined for the remainder of the season after suffering a torn meniscus in his right knee while on the basepaths, according to a report from ESPN published Sunday morning.
If Langeliers chooses to undergo surgery, he is not expected to return this season.
The Athletics moved Langeliers to the 10-day injured list on Sunday, with the designation backdated to Saturday. To fill the roster spot, the team called up catcher Brian Serven from Triple-A Las Vegas.
Fellow catcher Jonah Heim, a former All-Star himself, is anticipated to handle the majority of catching duties while Langeliers is out.
The 28-year-old Langeliers has put together a strong season, hitting .263 with 23 home runs and 51 RBIs across 93 games. Among American League catchers, he ranks first in both home runs and hits, with 99 on the year.
Over his career since being drafted ninth overall by the Atlanta Braves in the 2019 MLB Draft, Langeliers is batting .240 with 111 home runs and 288 RBIs. He came to the Athletics as part of the Matt Olson trade on March 14, 2022.
Serven, 31, has been productive at Triple-A Las Vegas this season, posting a .308 average with nine home runs and 46 RBIs in 61 games. In his limited time with the Athletics this year, he appeared in two games and went 1-for-4, a .250 average, against the Miami Marlins on July 5.
