At least 14 children lost their lives and several more were seriously hurt after the roof of a private tutoring center came crashing down in the Kahna area of Lahore, Pakistan, on Tuesday afternoon. Rescue officials, hospital staff, and local police all confirmed the tragedy.
The collapse happened at a tutoring facility located in the Kahna Nau/Eidgah settlement, where approximately 30 students were in the middle of class when the roof suddenly failed. At least one teacher was also trapped beneath the fallen structure along with the children.
Emergency responders from Rescue 1122 arrived quickly alongside police officers and community volunteers to begin digging through the wreckage. Early estimates suggested eight to ten children were trapped, but as the operation unfolded, it became clear that nearly 30 students had been inside the building when it collapsed.
Rescue teams were able to pull more than 20 children from the debris. Those who were injured were transported to nearby medical facilities, including THQ Hospital Kahna, where they received emergency care.
Hospital officials confirmed that 19 children were brought in for treatment. Of those, 14 did not survive their injuries, while five others remained hospitalized. Rescue officials noted that several of the injured children were in critical condition.
According to Rescue 1122, the roof — which was held up by T-R girders — suddenly gave way, bringing down the structure. Early findings point to possible structural weakness, substandard construction, or excessive load as contributing factors. An official investigation has been opened to determine the precise cause and whether any negligence was involved.
Search-and-rescue efforts continued for several hours as emergency crews combed through the rubble to confirm no one remained trapped.
The collapse sent shockwaves through the local community. Many parents rushed to the scene after word spread about the disaster. Residents began raising serious questions about safety standards at educational facilities operating within residential neighborhoods.
Officials from the Punjab government and rescue authorities expressed deep sorrow over the deaths. The incident has reignited broader concerns about building safety regulations for schools and private tutoring centers in heavily populated parts of Lahore.
