Jacinta Allan, the premier of Victoria — Australia’s second most-populous state — announced Tuesday that she has chosen to step down before a tightly contested state election scheduled for November.
Allan took the reins as premier in 2023 after her predecessor, Dan Andrews, stepped away from the role less than a year after guiding the centre-left Labor party to a third straight election victory.
Since assuming the top position, Allan has had difficulty gaining traction with voters, with multiple polls showing her approval numbers on a consistent downward slide.
