BERLIN — A vehicle is believed to have deliberately driven into a crowd gathered near Berlin’s Pride celebrations on Saturday evening, injuring several people, according to Berlin police, who announced they had launched a manhunt for possible suspects.
Authorities posted on the social media platform X that emergency services were responding to an incident in the city’s central Tiergarten park, located near the Brandenburg Gate, where a vehicle struck multiple people.
“We are searching intensively for suspects,” police said in their statement.
Hundreds of thousands of people had gathered peacefully in the German capital for the annual Christopher Street Day event — one of the largest Pride celebrations in all of Europe — before the incident brought the festivities to an end.
Emergency responders were treating the wounded at the scene, police confirmed. The exact number of victims and the severity of their injuries remained unclear in the immediate aftermath.
Tabloid newspaper Bild quoted a witness who described a white van traveling at high speed before plowing into the crowd. The witness said a man then exited the vehicle and fled on foot. A large number of emergency vehicles were reported at the scene.
