The Ukrainian capital of Kyiv was struck by Russian forces in the early hours of Sunday, with wreckage from the attack setting off fires across at least three districts of the city, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
Ukraine’s air force reported that Russian forces had launched ballistic missiles at the capital. An air alert that had been issued was lifted roughly 50 minutes later, and the air force withdrew its missile warning.
Mayor Klitschko confirmed that a fire broke out on the seventh and eighth floors of a multi-story apartment building located in a central district of the city. Footage circulating on unofficial online channels showed flames in various parts of Kyiv.
As of early Sunday, there were no immediate reports of anyone being injured or killed in the attack.
Reporters from Reuters on the ground said they heard multiple explosions during the assault.
The attack comes after President Volodymyr Zelenskiy warned on Friday that fresh Russian strikes were expected within the following 48 hours.
