Around the world, people are being killed, beaten, and imprisoned for what they believe — but a growing number are also being forced to flee their homes entirely because of their faith.
The Pew Research Center has been tracking how many people are displaced due to religious persecution, and the numbers are alarming. In 2023, residents in 58 different countries were driven from their homes because of their religious beliefs.
The crisis was most severe in the Middle East and North Africa, where 60% of countries in the region reported some level of faith-based displacement. The Asia-Pacific region was also heavily affected, with 44% of countries there experiencing similar displacement.
