New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith will face no criminal charges stemming from a June battery accusation, according to the Davie, Florida police department, which announced Tuesday that the investigation has been closed.
The incident began on June 21, when a woman dialed 911 claiming she had been assaulted by Smith at his residence. The woman identified herself as Smith’s ex-girlfriend and later posted footage of the encounter on social media, though the video contained no evidence of an assault having taken place.
No arrests or detentions were made at the scene. The woman was, however, removed from Smith’s property.
According to the official report, investigators were hampered by a lack of witnesses and surveillance footage to support the allegations. Compounding the problem, neither Smith nor the woman followed up with police as requested, leaving the responding officer with no way to identify who was responsible for the physical confrontation.
A supplemental case report obtained by ESPN stated: “No further investigative steps can be reasonably taken with the information presently available. Any future investigative action is contingent on additional information or evidence being brought forward.”
The original incident report noted two scratches on the right side of Smith’s face and a knot on the back of his head. The woman was documented as having a small cut on her right hand and a bruise on her left arm.
The woman had posted a video on Instagram alleging that Smith beat her and was neglecting his 6-year-old son. The child’s mother — a separate individual — later posted her own Instagram video in defense of Smith.
Smith has made no public statement about the matter, and the Jets organization has also remained silent. However, the NFL retains the authority to discipline the 35-year-old quarterback if it concludes he violated the league’s personal conduct policy.
“We are aware of the matter, and the club has been in contact with the league,” an NFL spokesman said in a statement.
Smith previously played for the Jets from 2013 to 2016 and rejoined the team in March via a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders.
