Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated Sunday that a Ukrainian strike against an Iranian commercial ship is something that will not be left without a response.
According to Iranian officials, the attack took place in the Caspian Sea and triggered an explosion aboard the vessel, resulting in the death of one crew member and leaving a second sailor with injuries.
Araqchi shared news of his diplomatic conversations on the social media platform X, noting he had spoken with both EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov regarding the incident.
Lavrov expressed his condolences over the loss of the sailor’s life in a statement published on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s official website.
According to that statement, Araqchi extended his thanks to local officials in Russia’s Astrakhan region — the port where the ship had begun its voyage — for their assistance to the surviving crew members. Araqchi also, according to Lavrov’s account, “stressed the need to put an end to such adventures by the Kyiv regime.”
The statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry further indicated that Araqchi briefed Lavrov on “continuing diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalating tension in the Middle East.”
