A Heat Advisory is in effect for much of the Delmarva Peninsula and surrounding areas Wednesday, as dangerously high heat index values are expected to reach up to 106 degrees.
The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued the advisory running from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 15. The affected areas on Delmarva include Kent, Sussex, and Delaware Beach counties in Delaware, as well as Caroline County on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Parts of southern New Jersey — including Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland, and Salem counties — are also under the advisory.
Meteorologists warn that the dangerous combination of hot temperatures and high humidity could lead to serious heat-related illnesses, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Residents are urged to take the following precautions during the hottest parts of the day:
• Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated
• Stay indoors in an air-conditioned space when possible
• Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight
• Check on elderly relatives, neighbors, and those without air conditioning
Health officials stress that children and the elderly are especially vulnerable during extreme heat events. Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles.
