An Egyptian court has handed down a five-year hard labor sentence to a man named Augustinos Saman after he posted videos on YouTube comparing the beliefs of Christianity and Islam.
The conviction brings renewed attention to the struggles faced by Christians living in Egypt, where followers of the faith account for roughly 10 percent of the country’s population.
Although Egypt does not typically appear among the most extreme violators of religious freedom on international watch lists, the country nonetheless enforces limitations on the religious expression and free speech of those who are not Muslim.
