The Chicago Cubs put on an offensive showcase Tuesday night, sending 12 batters to the plate in a six-run first inning on their way to an 11-2 blowout of the Detroit Tigers.
The big inning began when Pete Crow-Armstrong led off with a triple. Cleanup hitter Carson Kelly then drove in two runs with a single to right field. Michael Busch added a bloop RBI hit, and Ian Happ contributed a run-scoring infield single. Crow-Armstrong came up again in the same inning, drawing a bases-loaded walk in his second at-bat, which ended Framber Valdez’s evening.
Valdez (5-7) was pulled in favor of Ty Madden after recording just two outs on 42 pitches, surrendering all six runs on five hits and two walks. Madden then issued another bases-loaded walk to Seiya Suzuki, completing the disastrous frame for Detroit.
Crow-Armstrong finished the night a perfect 2-for-2 with three walks and two RBIs. Michael Conforto contributed a two-run home run for Chicago. Cubs starter David Peterson (5-7) made the most of the run support, throwing 6 2/3 scoreless innings while allowing just three hits, striking out four and walking only one.
For Detroit, Dillon Dingler provided the offensive highlights, doubling in the second inning and launching a two-run home run in the ninth. Dingler is now 6-for-8 with three home runs in the series. The win evened things up after Detroit’s 8-6 extra-innings victory on Monday.
Dodgers 2, Phillies 1
Max Muncy’s two-run home run in the fourth inning off Zack Wheeler provided all the offense Justin Wrobleski needed as visiting Los Angeles held off Philadelphia. Wrobleski (11-2) allowed one run and five hits over 6 1/3 innings, walking one and striking out seven while lowering his ERA to 2.62. Wheeler (10-2) gave up two runs on five hits across seven innings with nine strikeouts. Alec Bohm had three hits and an RBI for the Phillies.
Philadelphia had runners on second and third with one out in the ninth against Tanner Scott, but the rally fell short. Brandon Marsh hit a grounder to third that resulted in Justin Crawford being tagged out in a rundown between third and home. J.T. Realmuto, who was already on third, then retreated toward second and was thrown out to end the game.
Rays 12, Blue Jays 2
Nick Fortes and Yandy Diaz each hit three-run home runs as visiting Tampa Bay pounded out a season-best 21 hits in a rout of Toronto. Fortes finished with three hits and four RBIs, while Chandler Simpson and Ben Williamson each had four hits. Junior Caminero added two hits and three walks for the Rays, who took a 2-0 lead in the four-game series and clinched the season series against Toronto with a 7-1 record. Ernie Clement and George Springer each had two hits for the Blue Jays, who have dropped six of their last seven games.
Diamondbacks 6, Athletics 5 (10 innings)
Ildemaro Vargas delivered a bases-loaded single to left field with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift Arizona over the Athletics in Phoenix. Nolan Arenado had tied the game earlier in the inning with a single, and Max Kepler added a three-run homer for the Diamondbacks, who have now won seven of their last nine games. Jacob Wilson hit a tying two-run homer with two outs in the ninth for the Athletics, and Jonah Heim hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the 10th. Shea Langeliers also went deep for Oakland, who have lost 16 of their last 19 games.
Padres 8, Braves 3
Manny Machado slugged two home runs and Walker Buehler recovered from an early rough patch to pitch 5 2/3 strong innings as visiting San Diego defeated Atlanta. Machado went 2-for-5, connecting on a 412-foot solo shot to left in the fifth and a 418-foot solo blast to center in the sixth. Jackson Merrill and Fernando Tatis Jr. also homered for the Padres, with Tatis’s home run traveling 474 feet — the longest in the majors this season. Tatis finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Rookie Jim Jarvis hit a two-run triple for Atlanta.
Rangers 10, White Sox 0
Brandon Nimmo and Wyatt Langford homered, and Kumar Rocker and Marco Gonzales combined on a three-hit shutout as Texas routed visiting Chicago. Nimmo hit a two-run blast off White Sox starter Noah Schultz with two outs in the first inning and finished the night 4-for-4. Alejandro Osuna added three hits and three RBIs, Langford had two hits and two RBIs, and Ezequiel Duran and Nicky Lopez each contributed two hits and an RBI. Schultz (3-7) allowed five runs on a career-high 11 hits over 3 2/3 innings. Rocker (3-8) earned his first win since May 19, holding Chicago scoreless over six innings.
Guardians 5, Twins 2
Austin Hedges and rookie Petey Halpin hit back-to-back sacrifice flies in a key sixth inning to propel Cleveland past visiting Minnesota. Hedges drove in Kahlil Watson for the go-ahead run after the Guardians loaded the bases with no outs against Mike Paredes (0-3). Following a double steal, Halpin’s sacrifice fly off Taylor Rogers scored Travis Bazzana — a call that was initially ruled an out but overturned upon replay review — to make it 4-2. Bazzana then added a two-out RBI single in the seventh. Ryan Jeffers homered in the first inning for Minnesota, extending his on-base streak to 15 games.
Mets 4, Brewers 0
Zac Thornton threw six scoreless innings to earn his first major league win as visiting New York beat Milwaukee in the middle game of a three-game series. Jared Young and Luis Robert Jr. hit home runs, and Carson Benge added an unusual two-run double for the last-place Mets, who have won three of five since the All-Star break. Thornton (1-1) allowed three hits, walked one and struck out two, extending his scoreless streak to 18 innings dating to June 26. He now carries a 1.93 ERA through his first four big-league starts. Brandon Sproat (3-5), who was traded to Milwaukee by the Mets in the Freddy Peralta deal in January, gave up two runs on four hits and four walks over 4 2/3 innings.
Royals 3, Giants 2
Luinder Avila set career highs with seven strikeouts and 6 1/3 innings while allowing two runs, and Vinnie Pasquantino and Nick Loftin each had two hits and an RBI as Kansas City defeated visiting San Francisco. Avila (5-3), who has been filling in for Kansas City’s injury-depleted rotation since early June, gave up five hits and helped secure a series win. Pasquantino and Loftin delivered RBI singles in the sixth to erase a 2-1 deficit. Tyler Mahle (2-9) allowed all three runs on five hits in five-plus innings for the Giants, who have now dropped four straight and went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
Astros 5, Marlins 3
Tatsuya Imai held Miami to one run over six innings, Isaac Paredes launched a three-run homer, and Houston sent the Marlins to their eighth consecutive loss. Imai (6-4) recorded his fifth quality start of the season, stranding four baserunners in scoring position across his six frames. Closer Josh Hader earned his 11th save with a scoreless ninth. Joe Mack cut the deficit to 5-3 with a two-run homer off AJ Blubaugh in the seventh — his ninth of the season and second of the series.
Rockies 8, Nationals 7
Hunter Goodman hit a walk-off solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Colorado over Washington in Denver. The blast was Goodman’s 31st of the season, tying a career high and leading all catchers in home runs. Jordan Romano retired the side in order in the ninth for his seventh save, making a winner of Juan Mejia (3-6). Mickey Moniak also homered and singled for Colorado, while Cole Carrigg had three hits and Jake McCarthy added two. CJ Abrams homered twice for Washington, and James Wood had two doubles and two RBIs.
Angels 5, Cardinals 1
Jo Adell hit a two-run homer as part of a five-run first inning, and rookie Walbert Urena allowed one run on six hits over six innings as Los Angeles beat slumping St. Louis in Anaheim. Jorge Soler added a two-run double, Jose Siri had two hits including a double, and Zach Neto and Adell each finished with two hits for the Angels, who have won three straight. Urena (6-7) threw 28 pitches in a scoreless first inning, with 16 of them registering 100 mph or better. Alec Burleson had three hits for St. Louis, which has dropped four straight and five of six. Cardinals starter Matthew Liberatore (5-7) gave up five runs on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Reds 4, Mariners 2
Chase Burns pitched five scoreless innings to extend his winning streak to 11 straight decisions as Cincinnati defeated host Seattle. Elly De La Cruz, Eugenio Suarez and Nathaniel Lowe all homered for the Reds, who snapped Seattle’s three-game winning streak and knocked the Mariners out of first place in the American League West. Burns (12-1), in his first full big-league season, allowed just three singles. The Mariners went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10 baserunners. Luis Castillo (3-9) made a quality start for Seattle, giving up three runs on four hits over seven innings. Weston Wilson and Julio Rodriguez also homered for the hosts.
