The nation’s cattle herd grew modestly as of July 1, according to a new report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
While the overall cattle inventory edged upward, the report noted that the calf crop dropped by 2 percent, signaling a potential concern for future herd numbers in the coming seasons.
The USDA releases these periodic livestock inventory reports to give farmers, ranchers, and agricultural markets a snapshot of current cattle population trends across the country.
