Tony Romo, the well-known CBS NFL analyst and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback, was taken into custody Thursday night in Milwaukee after being suspected of operating a vehicle while under the influence, according to an arrest report from the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office.
The 46-year-old was pulled over at approximately 6:18 p.m. Thursday while driving southbound on Interstate 43. According to the report, Romo did not do well on standardized field sobriety tests, described as performing “poorly.”
He was arrested, processed, and later released at around 11 p.m. A court appearance has been set for September 21.
Under Wisconsin law, a first-time OWI offense is generally considered a civil violation rather than a criminal one, with fines typically ranging between $150 and $300.
Romo has deep roots in the area — he was born and raised in Burlington, Wis., a community not far from Milwaukee. At Burlington High School, he made history as the first student-athlete to earn all-state honors in three different sports: football, basketball, and golf. His high school team, the Burlington Demons, plays their home games on a field officially named Tony Romo Field, a designation given in 2020.
Since 2017, Romo has been the lead game analyst for NFL coverage on CBS, working alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson.
Romo’s NFL career began when he signed with Dallas as an undrafted free agent in 2003, coming out of Eastern Illinois. He took over as the Cowboys’ starting quarterback in 2006 and went on to guide the team to five playoff trips over the next 14 seasons. A four-time Pro Bowl selection, Romo finished with a 78-49 regular-season record across 156 games, with 127 starts. He completed 65.3% of his passes for 34,183 yards, throwing 248 touchdown passes against 117 interceptions.
