GENEVA — The United States announced Thursday it will provide more than $200 million in funding to the International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, according to a statement from the U.S. diplomatic mission.
The statement described the purpose of the contributions, saying they “support organizations that respond quickly when disasters strike, provide unparalleled access to people in need in conflict settings, and leverage preexisting worldwide disaster and humanitarian response infrastructure.”
The announcement comes under President Donald Trump’s administration, which has reduced financial support to numerous aid organizations as part of a stated goal to concentrate resources on what it calls “hyper-prioritised life-saving humanitarian assistance.” Despite those cuts, the United States continues to hold its position as the largest donor nation in the world, having pledged $1.8 billion to the United Nations back in May.
