Tropical Storm Bertha Threatens Gulf Coast with 50 MPH Winds

The National Hurricane Center in Miami issued its latest wind speed probability update for Tropical Storm Bertha on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. Coordinated Universal Time.

At the time of the report, the center of Tropical Storm Bertha was located near latitude 29.8 North, longitude 88.6 West, with maximum sustained winds of approximately 45 knots — equivalent to 50 miles per hour or 85 kilometers per hour.

Forecasters outlined the probability of sustained wind speeds reaching at least 39 mph, 58 mph, and 74 mph at specific locations over the next five days. The data shows onset probabilities for individual time periods as well as cumulative probabilities tracked from 12Z Wednesday through each forecast hour.

Among the locations facing the highest cumulative chances of tropical storm-force winds of at least 34 knots (39 mph), Buras, Louisiana topped the list with a 98 percent cumulative probability. Houma, Louisiana showed a 53 percent cumulative probability, while New Orleans carried a 31 percent cumulative chance.

Further west along the Gulf Coast, Cameron, Louisiana faced a 29 percent cumulative probability of 34-knot winds and a 3 percent cumulative chance of winds reaching 50 knots or higher. Morgan City, Louisiana showed a 36 percent cumulative probability of tropical storm-force winds.

In Texas, Galveston carried a 31 percent cumulative probability of reaching 34-knot winds, while Houston showed an 11 percent cumulative chance. Matagorda, Texas had an 18 percent cumulative probability, and High Island, Texas stood at 16 percent.

Other Texas locations including Port Arthur, Freeport, Kountze, Port O’Connor, and Rockport all showed lower but notable probabilities of experiencing tropical storm-force conditions within the five-day forecast window.
